Research Question 5

  • What are the solutions?

In my research, I have found that solution to all hedonism problems can be solved by whom caused the problems itself. The only reason for why hedonism develop in Malaysia is because not all parts of the society play their roles effectively. So, all factors rooted from the irresponsible society, then they are the only problem solver to formulate all solutions to the hedonism. They know theirself better.

Firstly, family is the most significant institution that hold a big responsibility to handle their children. Parents should know their tasks to teach all young generations by acting as the role model for them and control of their children's activities. Lok Yim Pheng, the Secretary General for National Union of the Teaching Profession said, " Parents could control and monitor younger children but it was not that easy with older ones". This show that parents are the main solutions maker that must have strong commitment to solve hedonism bad effects. For example, they need to contol their children from enjoying cyber cafe's services too much. This can leads to another harmful effects on children if they are got trapped in addiction to the internet called webaholics.

Second, the authorities and media should make use of their power and specialty to create a better life and culture in Malaysia. In our country, life and culture of teenagers are monitored and influenced by authorities and mass medias such as printing and electronics. Furthermore, in new era, we have alternative medias such as blog, website and social website. So, they may provide solutions to hedonism by creating a campaign, articles and road tour to create awareness among schools and universities students. Other than that, authorities should control entertainment places by having a regular spot check so that it can reduces the involvement of under age students from having enjoyment there. Another authority that can play their role is Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) and Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM). Roadblocks and 'operasi' can be taken as the measure to prevent teenagers from joining the illegal racing to get happiness and pleasure.

Last but not least, law enforcement can also be taken as the solution to hedonism. The enforcement of law can be made by rules and regulations to control the unhealthy culture in our community. Law provides penalty or punishment to the guilty. This create ''fear of punishment'' to the people so that they not go beyond the law. For example, rules and regulations has made to the unlicensed motorbikers. It includes license suspended, they be released on Parol, so that an officer monitors their movements and they have to check in with the officer and enrolment into community service, like cleaning and helping the poor. Not only that, heavy punishment should be taken for the effective result of law enforcement. It may includes fine and imprisonment.

So, these are the solutions that can be taken to solve hedonism in Malaysia.

Research Question 4

  • What are the effects of hedonism and why should we be concerned about hedonism?
After I have done my research, I have found that the bad effects of hedonism cannot counter the good effects of it. So, I will tell you the effects of hedonism from two main perspective.

Family
The first scope is family. Family is the basic unit of living society. Can you imagine living in a hedonistic family? Always seeking for pleasure. In example, seeking for pleasure of eating. The medical profession has blamed parents indulgence for the growing number of obese children and health problems such as diabetes, high-blood pressure and high cholesterol level. Sri Murugan Centre director and founder Datuk Dr M. Thambirajah said everything began with the family unit. He said in the past, teachers took it upon themselves to play the dual role of educator and parent. "But today, because of the workload and pressure to perform, they can no longer play the dual role. It is unfair to expect that from them." Thambirajah said children from middle-class families faced competition every day in examinations, piano lessons, art classes and others. He said these children faced stress. Human Dynamic child counsellor Wong Yee Men agreed that children were stressed out these days, but disagreed that this problem was confined to middle-class families. "Today, both parents have their own careers. Children want their parents to spend time with them, period." Wong said she had seen an increase in referral cases from parents, teachers and counsellors for children with behavioural problems, learning difficulties or even emotional blockages. "I feel the root problem lies with the parents." Wong said parents often brought back their "baggage" from work and this would have an adverse impact on the child's life. "For example, because of a bad day at work, the parent could have snapped at the child over a simple matter like watching television. This will stress out the child." Children's safety has also become a crucial issue. With more than 8,000 children reported missing over the last five years and more than 500 in the first six months of this year, experts are wringing their hands on what can be done. Even the missing children alert system remains just a proposal. Health-wise, our children are not doing too good, either. Children as young as 7 are developing Type 2 diabetes as a result of their couch-potato lifestyle and high-calorie food. Hospital Putrajaya, the referral hospital for diabetes cases in the country, has been recording an "alarming" increase in the number of cases. Hospital Putrajaya paediatrics department head Dr Fuziah Md Zain said children with a propensity for Type 2 diabetes were usually the youngest in the family. "We believe that because the youngest child is usually the pet in the family, parents give in to their demands for high-calorie food." The latest National Health and Morbidity Study showed that 20 per cent of children and teenagers in Malaysia have mental ailments. The figure was 13 per cent in 1996. Gleneagles Medical Centre Penang consultant psychiatrist Dr Zasmani Shafiee, during a Family Day gathering last month, said some 130,000 Malaysian children and adolescents suffered mental illnesses. Selayang Hospital saw a 300 per cent increase in the number of children seeking psychiatric help in the past four years. HELP University College's developmental and counselling psychologist Dr Brendan J. Gomez said depression, stress, violence and suicide were on the rise among young people. "It is a really worrying trend, and we want to try and address that problem right now."

Society
Next is society. Hedonism in Malaysia culture now is Mat Rempit tradition. Of late and more highlights of the misadventures of the Mat Rempits have popped p on our local television and newspapers, even in the internet, these "street warriors" seem to be endorsed on what they are doing. I would think that Mat Rempits get a thrill out of doing what they do. In that moment of time, they would only think of how great they are, and how great their friends think of them. They would not think too much into how bad it affects the other road users. It would probably be a case of "As long as nobody else get hurt" should be fine. It would normally be too late when someone does get hurt.

Research question 3

  • Why and how does hedonism develop in Malaysia?

Malaysia cannot escape from one of the country and nation that faces hedonism culture. It was developed and becomes more serious and need prevention and attention from all the parts of the society such as family institutions, teachers, non governmental organizations and the most important is goverment itself.

We should answered question 'why hedonism develop in Malaysia?' by looking at what group of the people that count up as the contributors for this problem. For information, most of them are teenagers. So, where should they be if they are not in this type of problem. Two main places for teenagers at their age are school or universities. If not, they must be apart of the labour for the human capital because our country is in the process to achive developed country level at least in year 2020. Then, by anwering which part of our society has failed to educate them, we can also answering the question 'why hedonism develop in Malaysia?'.

Firstly, family institution is the core subject for us to point up as the responsible institution for hedonism problem. Logically, teenagers have their own family so then their family is the closest people to educate their children with good values and ethics. Parents should educate their children to have their own destiny in life. Teeangers that feel themselves priceless will influenced by their friends such as drug addicts and illegal racing because they get happiness from such activities.

Secondly, schools as the formal education centre is the institution that can be said as the factor for why hedonism develop in Malaysia. Our curriculum such as Integrated Curriculum for Primary School and Secondary School need a reformation to make our students more competitive and attractive. Our education system is mostly based on the exam oriented system so this type of system create a tension to student. Teeangers that has no choice in their life as a student will seek for an entertainment to enjoy their life. This leads to hedonism.

Thirdly, our government and bodies under goverment's administration has no specific and integrated vision and mision in developing our Malaysian teenagers. The education system has made so exam oriented because the qualification for our students to enter universities. Then, some of the plural society get moral and financial support from governmental organization in developing entertainment and this attract our teenagers to get involved in hedonism.

So, these are the factors and explanations on how hedonism develop in Malaysia. It does not has single factor but the factors are so decentralized and it make hedonism more complex to understand.
